NAPIER.

Dear Bee February 18. The annual Waipawa OPEN LAWN TENNIS TOURNAMENT has been held throughout the week, and from all accounts the meeting has been a huge success as the number of entries was large, and included some of the best players of the colony. The fixture lasted three days, play continuing vigorously from 9 a.m. till dark in three courts. A large number of local players journeyed out by train, accompanied by interested spectators, including Mr and Mrs F Logan. Mrs Coleman. Misses Watt. Mr and Mrs A. Gore. Mr H Gore (Wellington). Misses Cot’erill. Hitchings. Messrs D. Kennedy. Humphries. Dinwiddle. Maefarlane. etc. The most exciting game was played by Messrs Logan and R. Humphries in the final round of Championship Singles, when the game reached over a hundred, the former gentleman managing to win after a hard tuzzle. He. with Mr C. D. Kennedy, won the Handicap and Champ’on Doubles, playing with great judgment and skill. The play of Messrs Butts and Loughnan. Thornton. Matthias, and Dinwiddie was very fine. In the ladies’ event Miss Bibby was victorious, and with Miss H. Hitchings she won the ladies’championship doubles. The final of the combined handicap resulted in some fine plav between Miss Bibby and Mr Matthias (Waipawa) and Miss H. Hitching’and Mr Dinwiddie (Napier), the latter couple losing by three points. Afternoon tea was thoughtfully provided by the ladies of Waipawa on each of the three days, and as the weather was de lightful. the attendance was large. A concert and dance was given to the visitors, who thoroughly appreciated the hospitality and kindness of everyone concerned. ST. AUGUSTINE’S SCHOOLROOM has been well patronised during the week owing to a sale of work. Promenade concerts have been given each night. The ladies’ shooting match was very interesting, in w’hich twenty-four ladies took part. Miss Minnie Parkinson secured first prize. Miss Rose Cbegwidden second, while Mrs J. H. Swan, the Mayoress, carried off the booby prize. GLEANINGS. Miss Dacent.. from Wellington, is visiting Napier. Miss Gordon, from Auckland, is staying with Miss Newton. Dr. Sweet has gone for a short trip to the South Island prior to taking Dr. Jarvis’ practice, as the latter gentleman purposes leaving for the Old Country. Dr and Mrs Milne Thompson have returned from Dunedin. Miss Ida Todd is staying with Mrs Canning at her residence, • Ellerslie.’ Mrs J. B. Rhodes, Miss Madge Rhodes, and Miss Muriel Balfour have returned from their riding tour. Mrs Turnbull and family have spent their New Year’s holid ly in Nelson, and appear to have thoroughly enjoyed their trip Mr Monckton and Mr Gray, the masters of the Napier Grammar School, have returned from Sydney. Miss Belle Blythe is in Napier now. and is wearing a mourning costume of black Merge skiri and Liberty silk blouse. Her sisters are staying with Mrs (Dr.) Roes. Waipawa. Gladys.
