Dear Bee, March 11. My news this week seems to be almost a l made up of afternoon teas. The first o ie lam going to tel. you about was an enormous affair given in the Grand Hotel on Monday 18th, by Mrs Tower as A FAREWELL to her sister. Miss Backhouse, The drawing-room of the Grand Hotel was open for the guests, where songs and piano solos were given. The afternoon tea was laid out on a table at the end of the h-dl, and I am sure that everyone enjoyed the delicious tea ard cakes. Mrs Tower welcomed her guests in tne hall, and looked exceedingly handsome in a gown of black crape cloth; the bodice was prettily trimmed with white satin and brilliant brooches; a stjlish black chip hat with a large black satin bow set off this charming costume to peifection. On Tuesday evening Miss Wilkinson (Manor Place) gave a very novel entertainment iu'the shape of a GIRLS’ EVENING WITHOUT ANY MEN. Batchelor, Handyside (Welling ton), Butterworth, and M. Williams. March 23. On Wednesday Mrs Brown (wife of one of our well-known medicos) gave a LARGE AFTERNOON TEA for her niece. Miss McGregor (Wellington). The table was uniquely decorated with heliotrope and purple asters, and a yellow silk centrepiece embroidered in gold. Some quite new kinds of Rus-ian sw’eets were placed on little tables in the hall and rawing-room ; they tempted the most fastidious tastes. The chief feature of the afternoon was some excellent music, contributed by Mrs Logan, Mrs Rose, and the Misses Royse, Roberts, Reynolds, etc. , .... Mrs Brown wore a handsome black corded silk, the bodice covered with jet passementerie; Miss Macgregor. stylish sage green twin c oth. the bodice s wathed in watered silk, high epaulettes corap’etely covered with jet. Amongst the guests were Mrs Van Fraser (Australia), wearing a smart black striped silk crepon lavishly trimmei with jet and satin ribbons; Mrs Logan, light print blouse. Eton jacket edged with fringe, black skirt, black lace hat; Mrs Sise, black serge costume, stylish toque, feather boa; Mrs Stock, black j tcket and skirt: Miss Monkman, black serge costume, light sailor hat; Miss Royse, fawn tweed jacket and skirt, pink t-ilk vest, black lace hat wi'.h pink roses: Miss Morris, black cashmere, full wais’coat of black surah silk ; Miss E Morris, navy blue clo<h; Miss G. Webster, brown serge costume, electric blue waistcoat; Miss Farquhar, blue serge, white vest; her sister alo wore blue serge: Miss Ulr-ch. green sik bodice, black hat with green flowers: Miss Ramsay, black serge, white hat trim ned witn brown; Miss Graham, blue se»g-*. bue spotted blouse; Miss 8. Graham, black serge: Miss Henderson, (Chris church), pa’.e grey crepon trimmed with white silk, large white straw hat; Miss Rattray, brown cloth, electric blue watered silk waistcoat: Miss G. Rattray, pink and blue striped blouse, black sergo jacket and skirt: Miss Reyno ds. brown corduroy velveteen dress, brown hat to match : Miss V. Reynolds, black serge, blue waistcoat, black feather hat; Miss Wright, black crfipon trimmed with blue silk ins rtion; Miss Roberts, black costume trimmed with watered silk ; Miss L. Roberts also wore black. ANOTHER LUNCHEON PARTY was also given on the same day by Mrs John Roberts (Littlebourne). The table was prettily trimmed with maiden-hair fern and yellow begonias. Amongst those present were Mesdames Roberts. Allen (Sydney* Gibson. Ulrich. Neill, Colquhoun, Stephenson, Burns. Watson. Macassey, Spence, the Misses Roberts. Allen. (Sydney), and Driver. On Wednesday Miss Bell Mac Lean gave a LARGE AFTERNOON TEA A rather startling but effective blending of red cacti and dahlia with green crepon formed the ocular addition to the palatable viands composing the afternoon tea. Music and songs were sandwiched between the cups.
