AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, July 31. I have rather a scarcity of news this week, but will begin with a society item. Lieutenant Hume, of Takapuna Fort, left Auckland this week for Wellington. A large and MOST SUCCESSFUL DANCE was given by Mrs Jackson, of Remuera. in the Lower Remuera Hall last week. This hall is one of the best in Auckland for dances, as the accommodation is so good. The floor was in excellent order. The decorations were very pretty. About two hundred guests assembled in the ball to partake of the hospitality of Mr and Mrs Jackson, who were ably assisted by their two charming daughters, and also two sons, to entertain their numerous visitors. Amongst them I noticed Misses Davy (two), Worsp, Whewell, Banks (two), McLaughlin, Stevenson. Law, Buckland, etc. On Thursday, CLUB NIGHT AT THE COLUMBIA RINK, there was a very large attendance, notwithstanding the fact that the Orchestral Union concert and ‘Charley’s Aunt’ were rival ‘ draws.’ Rinking I noticed Mrs Haines, black skirt, white blouse, pretty heliotrope butterfly bow ; Miss Buckland, all black, gem hat; Miss Atkinson, brown costume; her sister was in dark green braided gown, green hat with violets; Miss E. DRESSES AT ‘ CHARLEY’S AUNT.’ That ‘ funny, very very funny ’ play, caught on here as elsewhere, in a marvellous manner. Packed houses nightly greeted theold lady from Brazil—where the nuts come from. Amidst a crowded and fashionable dress circle I noticed, Mrs Alexander, light evening costume, handsome opera cloak of cream silk edged with white fur ; Miss Cora Alexander, white with sleeves of sea-green silk and white lace; Miss Nashelski, all white eveningdress ; Mrs Edmiston, black silk, lovely ruby cloak ; Miss Hancock, pretty eau-de-nil cashmere; Mrs A.L.
