TAKING DOWN THE SUM.
An Irishman served in one of the battalions of Foot Guards,, and had during the early part of his service to go to school. He was greatly annoyed at this, so one day the schoolmaster put a simple sum on the blackboard, and turning to Paddy said : ‘ Boyle, take down this sum ’ The blackboard was similar to a drawing-board, and stood on an easel. So directly the master had gone, Paddy walked up, took down the board, and put it in a corner. The master coming round after said : ‘ Have you done that, Boyle ?’ Paddy replied, pointing to it, ‘ Yes, sur, I took it down,, board an’ all.’
