Dear Bee, December 30. The ladies’ dance, which took place in the Alexander Hall on Wednesday. was a great success. There must have been about two hundred people present. The music was supplied by Mr Ezra Brooke’s band, and the floor was in flrst-class order, though a trifle heavy in the early part of the evening. The stage was nicely decorated with Punga ferns, nikaus, etc., and made a cool retreat between the dances, while the supper was most rerAercAe. The ladies’ committee deserve great credit for the complete manner in which everything was arranged, and Mrs Walter Penn. Hon. Sec., must be specially congratulated upon the success of the dance. Amongst those present were Miss Wood in heliotrope and white lace: Miss E. Fookes. yellow silk (very pretty): Miss Capel, white silk: Miss Winnie Capel, white: Miss E. TENNIS AT NEW PLYMOUTH. The Wanganui tennis players met the local champions last week, when our men were beaten bv nine games after a hard tussle. Messrs Harold. Harnicoat. Watson. Hon. John Butter, and G. Marshall represented Wanganui, and Messrs Harden, Weston. Smith. Wilson, and Wiggins played for New Plymouth. The courts were crowded with spectators, a large majority of whom were ladies, as is usual in New Plymouth. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies’ committee, which was much appreciated by those present. The local tournaments singles and combined doubles commence next week. Great interest is being taken in tennis here this season, which so far has been very enjoyable.
