NEW BUSH RESERVE FOR THE SOCIETY

By the generosity of Miss L. Valder, of Pirongia, and her sister, Miss E. M. Valder, of Mahina Bay, the Society has acquired a fine reserve consisting of 105 acres of bush at Pirongia, near Te Awamutu. The President and the Treasurer of the Society called on Miss L. Valder at her home, and while there inspected the bush. It was milled many years ago but never clear felled, and today there is a fine stand of second-growth trees containing many berry-bearing species and some particularly fine specimens of tree ferns. Miss E. M. Valder has given also a very generous donation, which will be set aside to meet future fencing and general maintenance liabilities. The reserve will be known as the Walter Scott Forest and Bird Protection Society Reserve. Mr. Walter Scott had a great interest in the bush in earlier years and it will bear his name at the request of the Misses Valder. Our Waikato Section will control the bush on behalf of the New Zealand Council, which, at its last meeting, expressed gratitude to the donors for their magnificent gift, which, now being set aside in perpetuity, will form a habitat for the many bush birds still to be found in the vicinity. r
