A New Movement
The following statement, submitted by the North Auckland Forest Society, is addressed to school children of that district: —
“To assist in bringing about greater interest in New Zealand birds and forests you will receive quarterly throughout the year one of these magazines. Through the co-operation of the Forest and Bird Protection Society, the North Auckland Forest Society is providing a year’s subscription to this journal for every school throughout Northland, and for every pupil as well, who is a student under the Education Board’s correspondence scheme.
“Each one of you who reads this announcement can help to increase interest in our Bush and Forest. Remember what you read and tell others, both young and old. “Go into the bush and forest, and enjoy the beauty. Observe what you see there. Guard from fire the bush, forest and single trees such as the Pohutukawa by the sea side. “Draw the attention of others to the necessity of preserving the gifts which nature has been thousands of years in slowly building up. “About 20th September, 1940, a show and display will be held in Whangarei. It will be your show. Your help will make it an outstanding success. “There will be competitions for folios of specimens, collections of seeds, and guessing the names of bush trees arranged in pots. You have almost a year in which to prepare. Between now and September, there will be the seeding time. Take every opportunity of gathering seeds. While doing this be careful of the young seedlings, and where there is a suitable space plant a little tree. WATCH IT GROW.”
