Ex-serviceman settled April, 1949. Matawhero, at Te Arai, 670 acres. Acquired : April, 1949. Objective : Four dairy and cropping units on 200 acres for allotment July, 1951, eight dairy and cropping units on 430 acres for allotment July, 1954, four orchard units on 40 acres for allotment July, 1954. Development Programme : 140 acres cultivation and grassing, 1,400 chains fencing, 200 chains repairs to fences, sixteen dwellings, twelve cow-sheds, sixteen implement-sheds, water-supplies for all units, 40 chains internal roading. Progress : Programme will be governed by effect of Waipaoa River channel-diversion programme at present under consideration, and until finality reached development will be delayed. Rakaukaka, at Manutuke, 2,054 acres. Acquired : 1,625 acres February, 1948, and 429 acres April, 1949. . Objective : Four orchard units on 49 acres for immediate disposal as " bare land," three dairy units on 427 acres for allotment July, 1950, seven dairy units for allotment July, 1951, and one sheep unit for allotment July, 1951. Development Programme : 300 chains draining, 600 acres cultivation and grassing, 3,000 chains fencing, eleven dwellings, ten cow-sheds, eleven implement-sheds, water-supplies, 100 chains "internal" roading formation and metalling. Progress: 40 chains open drains, 140 acres under cultivation, 240 acres cultivated and grassed,, 260 chains fencing, 100 chains roading completed, seven dwellings, six implement-sheds, and six milking-sheds under contract. Four bare land orchard units allotted to ex-servicemen in May, 1949. Sherbrooke, at Waerenga-o-kuri, 2,314 acres. Acquired : March, 1949. Objective : two sheep units for allotment April, 1951. Development Programme : 450 acres manuka to be cut and grassed, 80 acres cultivation and grassing, 107 chains fencing, 500 chains repairs to fences, one dwelling, one implement-shed, renovations to wool-shed, one water-supply, 80 chains road formation and metalling. Progress : 200 acres cut and surface sown, 65 acres in crop prior to regrassing, 300 chains fencing repairs, roading completed. St. Leger, at Hangaroa, 5,681 acres. Acquired : June, 1946. Objective : Four sheep units for allotment April, 1950. Development Programme : 750 acres manuka to be cut and grassed, 365 acres cultivation and grassing, 350 chains of fencing, 1,400 chains repairs to fencing, three dwellings, three implement-sheds, sheep and cattle yards, three water-supplies, bridge, 400 chains " internal " road formation and metalling. Progress : Completed with exception of 80 chains boundary fencing. Exserviceman manager and three ex-servicemen on wages with promise of sections. Te Wera, Matawai, 9,858 acres. Acquired^: 1927, and farmed by the Department as a sheep-station. Objective : Five sheep units for allotment July, 1949. Development Programme : Four dwellings, two wool-sheds, four implement-sheds, four water-supplies, minor fencing, roading. Progress: Development completed. Five ex-servicemen settled August, 1949. Waikoko, at Waerenga-o-kuri, 6,386 acres. Acquired : February, 1947. Objective : Three sheep units for allotment April, 1950, and four sheep units for allotment April, 1951. Development Programme : 1,500 acres of manuka to be cut and burned and area grassed, 800 acres to be cultivated, cropped, and grassed, 1,700 chains fencing, 1,100 chains repairs to fences, six dwellings, 1 wool-shed, six implement-sheds, six water-supplies. Progress : 850 acres have been manuka cut and grassed, 480 acres cultivated and grassed, 320 acres in crop, 1,440 chains fencing, 1,100 chains repairs to fences, building programme completed. Ex-serviceman manager and six ex-servicemen are on wages with promise of sections. Waimiro, at Waimata, 1,807 acres. Acquired: April, 1949. Objective : Two sheep units for allotment April, 1951. Development Programme : 90 acres manuka to be cut and grassed, 60 acres cultivation and grassing, 105 chains fencing, 230 chains repairs to fencing, one water-supply, one swing-bridge, one dwelling, one implement-shed. Progress : 60 acres in crop to be grassed and buildings to be erected to complete programme. Wharekiri, at Whangara, 1,673 acres. Acquired : April, 1949. Objective : three sheep units for allotment April, 1950. Development Programme : Not yet finalized, but will include two dwellings, two implement-sheds, shearers' quarters, renovations to homestead, sheep and cattle yards, fencing. Progress : Homestead renovated, shearers' quarters erected, 25 chains fencing and 100 chains of repairs. Hawke's Bay Land District Ahuriri Lagoon, at Napier, 7,188 acres. Development of this area was commenced in 1934. The pasture programme is steadily progressing and a further 600 acres was laid down in permanent pasture this year. , Sixteen thousand sheep have been fattened during the past year and the ewe flock has been increased from 4,000 to 6,000 sheep, while the wether flock has been correspondingly reduced. Twelve ex-servicemen have been settled on market gardens at the northern end. The final utilization of this block is being discussed with the Napier Harbour Board, on whose behalf the Department is developing the land.
