Expenditure for the Year ended 31st March, 1918, compared with the Year ended 31st March, 1917.

Surplus. Before ray departure for England I announced that the surplus for the year 1917-18 amounted to £5,085,934, and I now supply the details showing how the surplus is arrived at. 1 may explain that the accumulated surpluses at the 31st March, 1917, amounted to £6,474,854, and consequently, after adding the abovenamed surplus for 1917-18, it will be seen that the total surplus at the 31st March, 1918, amounted to £11,560,788. The following figures will serve to show that, although expenditure upon public works has been very considerably curtailed during the past year, essential services have still been provided for, and a total amount of £1,141,172 has been spent on these services.
