1883. NEW ZEALAND.

RESERVES FOR SECONDARY OR UNIVERSITY EDUCATION IN THE NORTH ISLAND, NELSON, AND WESTLAND.

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives, dated 10th day of July, 1883. " That there be laid before this House a return showing the acreage and situation of all reserves or endowments of land in the North Island, Nelson, and Westland, made for the purposes of secondary or University education ; also the body or bodies under whose management or control such reserves or endowments are. Such return to show, as far as possible, the revenue derivable from such reserves or endowments. Further, that such return also show the money-grants (if any) made in aid of above purposes ; the reserves or money-grants for secondary or University education to be separately enumerated."— (Mr. Fish.)

UNIVERSITY ENDOWMENT RESERVES. The lands specified in the following table have been set apart by Act "for promoting higher education in the respective provinces in which such reserves are situated, in such manner as the General Assembly may from time to time determine:"—

Note. —The sum of £112 2s. 6d. received as rents of these reserves is hold in trust by the; Treasury for appropriation as may be determined hereafter by the General Assembly. About a fourth of the Patea reserve of 10,000 acres has recently been surveyed, and communication by a road opened up with the settled districts. There is thus a near prospect of the land being disposed of. The other reservesare not likely to prove of much value till settlement in their vicinity has made greater progress.

UNIVERSITY MONEY GRANTS. Auckland University College—annual grant by Act, £4,000. Note. —Tlio annual statutory grant of £3,000 to the New Zealand University is common to all the colony.
