ORDERS OF REFERENCE. Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Wednesday, the 23rd Day of July, 1930. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to deal with all matters in connection with Defence ; with power to call for persons, papers, and records ; three to be a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. Barnard, Mr. Dickie, Mr. Healy, Mr. .Jordan, Colonel McDonald, Mr. McDougall, Captain Rushworth, Mr. Samuel. No. 77. Petition of David Harnett. Praying that he be granted arrears of Army pay, or other compensation. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee has carefully considered this petition, and recommends that it be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 15th August, 1930.
No. 50. —Petition of A. Twyneham and 14,999 Others. Praying for the abolition of compulsory military training under the Defence Act. I have the honour to report that, as the subject-matter is a matter of policy, the Defence Committee has no recommendation to make thereon. 15th August, 1930.
No. 62. —Petition of George Thomas Summerfield, of Redcliffs, Christchurch. Praying for renewal of his war pension. T have the honour to report that the Defence Committee has carefully considered this petition, and recommends that it be referred to the Government for consideration ; and the Committee desires to express the opinion that the petitioner should be granted a rehearing by the Pensions Appeal Board, and that Drs. Fenwick and Aciand, who examined the petitioner, should be called to give evidence before the Board, and also that the petitioner should be examined by an independent medical examiner. 18th August, 1930.
No. 114. —Petition of Maude Ashley, of Christchurch. Praying for a war widow's pension. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 26th August, 1930.
No. 172. —Petition of Trevor Noel Holmden,, Solicitor, Auckland. Praying for the payment of difference in pay and gratuity between the British and New Zealand rates during the war with Germany. I have the honour to report that, as the subject-matter of this petition is a matter of policy, the Defence Committee has no recommendation to make thereon. 29th September, 1930.
No. 133. —Petition of Henry Alexander Wilson, of 48 Cromwell Road, Mount Eden, Auckland. Praying for employment in the Government service or a compassionate allowance in respect of his military service. 1 am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 29th September, 1930.
No. 183. —Petition of Sarah Louisa Robbie, of Melling, Lower Hutt. Praying for payment of allowance in connection with her husband's war services. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 29th September, 1930.
No. 232. —Petition of Sydney Lionel Boyd, Chemist's Assistant, of Christchurch. Praying that he he granted a pension owing to illness alleged to have been contracted during war service. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 16t.h October, 1930.
No. 233. —Petition of Claude Alexander Basil Martin, of 36 Upper Vincent Street, Auckland. Praying for review of Pensions Board and Pensions Appeal Board decisions, and that he he granted a military pension. No. 226.—Petition of Albert W. J. Shutt, of Otahuhu. Praying that he be found light work owing to loss of a limb alleged to have been caused while undergoing military examination. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 16th October, 1930.
Special Report. I have the honour to report that the members of the Defence Committee desire to place on record their cordial appreciation of the ability, tact, and unfailing courtesy during the session manifested by the Chairman, Colonel McDonald, in the conduct of the business of the Committee ; and the members of the Committee further desire that this resolution be recorded in the minutes of the Committee, and also that it be reported to the House. Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee desires to record its appreciation of the efficient services rendered by the Clerk of the Committee, Mr. M. S. Paslev. 16th October, 1930.
Final Report. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee, consisting of ten members, has held nine meetings, with an average attendance of seven members. Twelve petitions were considered and reported on. 16th October, 1930. T. W. McDonald, Chairman.
