Ordered, " That the petition of Kitty Esther Kidson bo referred direct to the Education Committee."—(Mr. Atmore.) Thursday, the 15th Day of July, 1920. Ordered, " That Standing Order No. 219 bo suspended, and that a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of fourteen members, to consider all matters relating to school-teachers, education, and public instruction generally, public-school training of teachers, higher education, technical education, manual instruction, and such other matters affecting education as may be referred to it; to have power to call for persons and papers ; three to be a cpaorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. Atmore, Mr. Bitolioner, Mr. Eraser, Hon. Mr. Hanan, Mr. Luke, Mr. Malcom, Mr. Masters, Mr. McNicol, Mr. Nash, Mr. Poland, Hon. Dr. Pomare, Mr. Sidcy, Mr. Wright, and the mover."—(Hon. Mr. Parr.) Tuesday, the 20th Day of July, 1920. REPORTS. No. 152. —Petition of Joseph McLauOHLAN, of Auckland. Praying for reinstatement as a school-teacher. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 30th September, 1920.

No. 354 of 1919. —Petition of Herbert Rogers, of Hokianga. Praying for compensation for loss of office at the Cook Islands. I am directed to report that, while recognizing the good work done in education by Mr. Rogers at Arorangi, in Rarotonga, this Committee has no recommendation to make. 30th September, 1920.

No. 209. —Petition of the Canterbury Superannuated Teachers' Association. Prating for increase of superannuation owing to the high cost of living. I am directed to report that, as the question of increased superannuation affects all Departments and is a matter of general policy, the Committee recommends the petition be referred to the Government. 30th September, 1920.

No. 250. —Petition of Frank L. Combs, of Featherston. Praying for restitution of salary lost through reduction of grade of school. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 30th September, 1920.

No. 130.—Petition of Secondary Schools Assistants' Association of New Zealand. Praying for refund of costs awarded against them in the appeal case Searle v. New Plymouth High School Board. 1 am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 30th September, 1920.

No. 268.—Petition of F. L. Dillon and 29 Others. Praying— (a) In view of the high cost of living, that the rate of superannuation for superannuated women teachers be increased; (b) that legislation be passed to prevent the injustice of compulsory retirement at the age of fifty-live years; (c) that receipts for superannuation allowances be exempt from stamp duty. I have the honour to report — (a) That, as this is a matter of policy now under the consideration of the Government, the Committee has no recommendation to make; (b) as the Committee finds that the action of Boards is not uniform, it refers this matter to the Government for favourable consideration. isth October, .1920.

No. 115, Petition of J. D. Lynch and 12 Others; and No. 119, Petition of John Menzies and 10 Others. Praying for renewal of railway travelling-concession to teachers in Catholic schools. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 19th October, 1920.

No. 76. —Petition of Kitty Esther Kidson and 2 Others. Praying for adjustment of salaries paid whilst acting as assistants at the Nelson Boys' Public School. I have the honour to report that the Committee recommends the petition to the favourable consideration of the Government; at the same time it is of opinion that further inquiries should be made relative to the position held by Kitty Esther Kidson. 22nd October, 1920.

No. 339. — Petition of Matthew Spencer. Praying for provision of money to enable him to replace furniture destroyed by fire in cottage at Boys' Training-farm, Weraroa. 1 have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered the petition, and recommends that it be referred to the Government for consideration. 22nd October, 1920.

No. 341. —Petition of Henry Luks. Praying that the verdict of the Teachers' Appeal Court in favour of the Wellington Technical School Board be set aside and that a rehearing of the case be ordered. I have the honour to report that, whilst the Committee, under the circumstances, does not think it necessary to reopen the question of the proceedings before, and decision of, the Appeal Court, it finds that Mr. Henry Luks, who was for thirteen years a teacher in the Technical School, proved himself to be a capable, trustworthy, and successful teacher. 29th October, 1920.

Education Amendment Bill. The Education Committee, to which was referred the above-mentioned Bill, has the honour to report that it has carefully considered the same, and recommends that it be allowed to proceed, with amendments as shown on the copy of the Bill attacbed hereto. 2nd November, 1920.

No. 365. —Petition of Florence Suisted. of Mastertou. Praying for compensation for loss of salary incurred as result of illness whilst in the employ of Education Department. I have the honour to report that the Committee, whilst appreciating the services rendered by Miss Suisted during the epidemic, regrets that it has no recommendation to make. sth November, 1920.

Special Report. I am directed to report that the following resolution was passed by the Committee: "That the members of the Education Committee desire to place on record their high appreciation of the valuable services rendered by the Chairman (Mr. Malcolm), and tender their sincere thanks to him." H. Atmore. sth November, 1920.

Final Report. The Education Committee, consisting of fourteen members, has during the session held eleven meetings, the average attendance at each meeting being ten members. Twelve petitions were referred to and considered by the Committee : of these, four were reported to the House for favourable consideration, two were reported for consideration, and six were reported " No recommendation." The Committee also considered the Education Amendment Bill, which was reported to the House. sth November, 1920.
