IMPORTED AND NEW ZEALAND RAILWAY SLEEPERS (PARTICULARS RELATIVE TO).

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 24th July, 1903. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return giving the following particulars in respect to railway sleepers contracted for as per Return No. 17 in the Railway Statement, 1902 : (1) Number of sleepers imported from Australia during the year ; (2) average life of that class of sleeper; (3) average cost per sleeper landed ; (4) average cost per sleeper of most durable New Zealand timbers ; and (5) average life of that class of sleeper."—(Mr. Duthie.)

New Zealand Government Railways. Information in respect to Railway Sleepers contracted for as per Return No. 17 in the Railway Statement, 1902. 1. Number of sleepers imported from Australia during the year : 118,029. 2. Average life of that class of sleeper : Approximately twenty-five years. 3. Average cost per sleeper landed : 4s. l^d. 4. Average cost per sleeper of most durable New Zealand timbers : Pariri, 4s. Id.; totara, 3s. 3Jd.; silver-pine, 3s. lljd. 5. Average life of that class of sleeper: Approximately twenty years. T.
