ROYALTY PAID BY COAL MINES IN THE COLONY DURING THE PAST THREE YEARS.

Return, to an Order of the House of Representatives, dated June, 18S3. Ordered, " That a return be laid on the table showing the royalty paid by the various coal mines in the colony during the past three years, the rate per ton paid by each mine, the total royalty in each case, the amount due by each mine ; and, further, what amounts the Government have promised or intended to forego, and the mines to which such concessions have been or will be granted."— (Mr. Petris.)

(») The company only pays royalty at the rate of 25 per cent, on its profits. (») Lease from the Ist Ju'lv, 1882. ( c) Balance, £1,964 Is. Id.", paid since the 31st March, 1883. ( d) One year's royalty remitted, viz., £G37 19s. 6d., being allowed as equivalent to two years' dead rent, paid for 1880 and 1881, before area of lease could be defined. ( c) Thirty years from the sth May, 1884; also 2s. 6d. per acre. (') Thirty years from the sth May, 1884 (royalty paid to sth May, 1883); also ss. per aero. (s) Twenty-one years from the sth May, 1880; also ss. per acre. ( h) Thirty years from the 18th August, 1880 (ro} Talty paid to the Ist January, 1884); also 2s. (3d. per acre. {') Twenty-one years from the 18th August, 1880; also 2s. 6d. per acre.
