1883. NEW ZEALAND.
RESERVES FOR SECONDARY OR UNIVERSITY EDUCATION (RETURN SHOWING SITUATION, ACREAGE, ETC., OF).
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives, dated 16th August, 1883. Ordered, "That a return be laid upon the table showing the situation and acreage of all reserves or endowments of land in the Middle Island for secondary or university education, under whose control or management such reserves or endowments are, and the revenues derivable therefrom."— (Mr. Tole.)
University Endowment Reserves, South Island. The lands specified in the following table, along with 44,354 acres in the North Island, have been set apart by Act "for promoting higher education in the respective provinces in which such reserves are situated, in such manner as the General Assembly may from time to time determine."
Note.—The sum of £408 3s. 10d., received as rent of these reserves, is held in trust by the Treasury for appro priation as may be determined hereafter by the General Assembly.
Univeesity Money Geants. The sum of £500 has been voted annually by the General Assembly for some years past to the Otago University in aid of the School of Mines.
Reserves held for the Higher (University) Education, South Island.
Otago University.—The land sold is on deferred payment; terms, 10 per cent, on deposit, 10 per cent, in eighteen months, 10 per cent, in three years, balance in ten years ; bears interest at 6 per cent. The interest, after defraying expenses of sales, will yield about £135. Museum Beseeve.—Of the rental of the reserve the museum received £825, and the atheneeum £91135. 4d.; total, £916 13s. 4d.
