PRE-EMPTIVE RIGHTS IN CANTERBURY (RETURN OF HOMESTEAD AND IMPROVEMENT).

No. 1. Mr. J H. Bakes to the Undee-Secbetaey for Ceown Lands. Sib,— Land, Office, Christchurch, 28th July 1883. I have the honor to forward a fresh return of pre-emptive rights sold for the period Ist October, 1879, to 30th April, 1880, and to ask you to be so good as to substitute this for the one sent the 14th instant. The former return was compiled from the minute-book, which omitted to show in every case the amount of pre-emptive right included in each application. I have, &c, John H. Before sending my telegram of the 14th instant I asked the officer responsible for the return if the figures were correct, as from the small area given I doubted it, and I was assured they were correct before I sent the telegram.— John H. No. 2. Memoeandum for the Undee-Seceetaby, Wellington. District Lands Office, Christchurch, 31st July, 1883. In compliance with the Hon. the Minister of Lands' telegram of the 13th instant I forward herewith further return showing pre-emptive rights sold during the years 1877, 1878, 1879, and to 30th April, 1880. I regret that its preparation has absorbed so much time , but it was necessary to go through the whole of the applications (some 8,000) received during the period covered, for apparently the information could not be correctly arrived at from the minute-book. It would have taken longer had I not allowed the two temporary assistants engaged in getting out excess areas to assist. If the return for previous years is required please advise. John H.
