Mr. J. McNair, district railway engineer for Canterbury and Westland, who has retired after thirty• seven years' service in the Railway Department. A Maori skull and tiki were found near the scene of. the Wairau Massacre on Wednesday in the course of excavation work, and it is thought that the discoveries concern the body of a Maori tvoman named Te Ronga, who was hit by a bullet from one of the Pakeha guns, which is said to have brought about the whole massacre. A 'picture of the skull is inset, shoiving the bullet hols.
