SAND LACKING.—The beach at St. Clair is in very poor condition as regards sand quantity at present, local residents stating it to be at the lowest level they have known. Rocks project above the sand along the full extent of the esplanade, and provide an awkward obstruction for those desiring to get on to the beach, including members of the Surf Club, who are required to carry their surf boat across them from the bottom of the, steps. A continuation of these steps or a ramp leading to the sand is needed.

THE SEA’S DAMAGING ACTION. Top—In the bathing season the beach below the St. Clair Esplanade was covered with deep sand. Now it is rock-strewn. Bottom.—Sun bathers during the summer were almost able to use the tops of the groyne piles as seats. Sand, seven feet deep, has been carried out by recent 'heavy seas.

Most of the sand at the base of the St. Clair esplanade wall has been washed away, leaving bare rock in its place. The bottom step of the concrete steps is nearly two feet above the rocks. The beach part of the esplanade still has plenty of sand and there is no danger, at present, of excessive scouring there. It is thought that when the weather is again from the east the sand will be returned.
