Alexander von Humboldt, the Prussian naturalist, explorer, and liberal, whose name was given to the Humboldt Current, saw the writing of his greatest scientific work, “Cosmos,” as a race against death. He spent the last 25 years of his life on the book, and completed the final volume shortly before his death at the age of 89. The drawing of Death and Humboldt is reproduced from “Humboldt and the Cosmos,” by Douglas Betting, which is reviewed on this page.
