Kennedys Bush Road in the 1850s and 1860s knew the heavy passage of bullock teams and their waggons, and the coming and going of bush workers between Halswell and bush-felling on the hills, writes GORDON OGILVIE in the second and final article about this area. The pictures, anti-clockwise from above, show the Halswell Quarry area today; Kitcheners Knoll on the skyline to the left, where the "Battle of Baisweil” was fought in 1910; the Sign of the Bellbird at Kennedys Bush in its pre-war heyday; the Summit Road being formed here; a workman’s hut during this construction: troops at the “Battle of Halswell"; Lord Kitchener (hand raised in car) returning to Christchurch at the end of the exercise; Dr Cockayne and H. G. Ell.
