THE FIRST WOODEN HOUSE IN OTAKAU (Otago Heads) was built by Weller Bros., owners of the Otago Heads Whaling Station, very early in the ’thirties, and occupied later by their bookkeeper and storekeeper, Octavius Harwood. The other two houses, one of which was occupied by John Anderson (after whom A.nderson’s Bay is named) were built later. When the emigrants arrived in 1848 there was quite a large settlement at Otakau, on the Peninsula side of the Rocks (where the jelly now is). This included a druggist’s, sheep station, two hotels (without license), a tinsmith, and others. Seaward, between the Rocks and Harrington Point, were the kaiks with their respective chiefs—Koroko, Potaki, and Pohero. On the summit of the Heads were Dick Driver (pilot), Haretai, Jacky White, and Taiaroa. —From the painting in oils by Mrs Alick Colville (nee Jane Dick), in the possession of the Otago Early Settlers Association.
