NEW ZEALANDERS IN THE HIMALAYAS.—Photographs taken on last year’s successful expedition to the Garwhal Himalayas by four young New Zealanders, Messrs H. E. Riddiford, E. P. Hillary, W. G. Lowe, and E. Cotter. Messrs Riddiford and Hillary subsequently were members of Mr Eric Shipton’s British Everest reconnaissance expedition. With Mr Lowe they will join Mr Shipton’s party which shortly will attempt to climb Cho-Oyn (26,000 ft 20 miles west of Mount Everest, in preparation for an assault on Everest next year. LEFT: Two of the New Zealanders, roped and wearing crampons, ascending a 2000ft icefall leading to the summit ridge of Mukut Parbat (23,760ft of which Riddiford and Cotter, with Pasang, a Sherpa porter, made the first ascent.
