Along the old trail, a sentinel of the ages, stands the Old Man Rock, still watching, as it watched in the days of our forefathers, and when the Maori in the Stone Age fought his battles. Broken implements of war around the rock prove the existence of these latter. —Philip George, photo.

THE "OLD MAN OF THE MOUNTAINS." The "Old Man Rock" is a well-known landmark in Central Otago. Perched on the rim of one of the flat-topped mountains, it is discernible on a clear day from Clyde or Alexandra. It is about 68 feet high and, although the sides are almost precipitous, it is said that a sailor once scaled it and left a half-crown for anyone who cared to duplicate his feat.
