Elvis Aaron Presley, aged two, with his parents, Gladys and Vernon Presley, in 1937. The illustration comes from “Elvis Presley: King of Rock and Roll,’’ by Richard Wootton (Hodder and Stoughton, 128 pp, $20.75). Wootton is an English author who developed a taste for Presley’s music while still at primary school. He has written a mildly diverting account of the Presley years, taking as his theme the idea that Presley was a child of the Great Depression.
