(At Right) TREASURED PAINTING.—The old chief and the present pictured at the historic Manukonki Pa Waitara. The present chief of this once well-populated district is Kaho (holding the portrait), who, when he was very young, lived with Wiremu Kingi on the banks of the Waitara River. Kaho and his people are proud of this oil painting of Wiremu Kingi, done by Mr Oliver Haddon after an old photograph taken at the request of Sir George Grey about 1847. Mr Haddon's painting was acquit ed by the Maoris of Manukoriki Pa. NEW SCHOOL BUILDING—A start was made recently on the foundations of the new primary school buildings at Newtown, Wellington, to replace the old buildings well known to those who pass up down Riddiford Street.
