MANPOWER RELEASES
“NO PRECIPITATE ACTION” NUMBER AFFECTED NOT LARGE “There will be no precipitate action,” said Mr C. A. Beaufort, manpower officer for the Hamilton district, when referring this morning to the announcement from Wellington concerning exemption of certain groups from future manpower direction. It was stated that it could not possibly be a case of allowing anyone qualified to leave his or her employmen at several days’ notice. That would only result in complete confusion. Mr Beaufort said he had not received the full text of the announcement by the Minister but it seemed to him that there would not be a very large number of men or women affected by the relaxation of the existing controls. Referring to over-age men employed in dairy factories, Mr Beaufort said these could not be released until replacements were available, and these replacements would mostly come from ex-servicemen. At Karapiro it was considered unlikely that many men would apply for release, for high wages could be earned there by cpmpetent men. The new hydroelectric works at Maraetai would continue to absorb a great deal of unskilled labour, and if a man was able-bodied and willing to try to earn his wages he need have no fear of being out of work.
