YOUNG PEOPLE’S CLUB

ADDRESS BY EX-SERVICEMAN An amusing and illuminative address was given to a well-attended meeting of the Young People’s Club by Warrant-Officer Jack Ward, wno went overseas in the Second Echelon, and returned recently from Italy. He pointed out that although homes and properties owned by f ascists in Italy were unmolested by the Germans, beautiful villas belonging to those Italians unsympathetic to Mussolini were ruthlessly and wantonly destroyed or damaged. He mentioned that an ironical point in the campaign was that the common language used by the Ghurka, Polish, French, Czech and Allied Forces was Italian, of which all had a smattering, sufficient to understand each other. Questions were asked about the campaigns in North Africa and Italy, after which Mr Burton, president of the Greater Hamilton Association, thanked Warrant-Officer Ward for his excellent speech. The following officers were elected:—Patron, Mr H. D. Caro; president, Dr. W R. Fea; vice-presidents: Mrs H. C. Ross, Messrs W. H. Short, C. A. Barrell, D. C. Street, E. G. Scrimshaw. Committees were appointed for varied activities, including an adult education course, under supervision of the Auckland University.
