NATIONAL PARTY

RAGLAN ELECTORATE MEETING Delegates were present from as far north as Tuakau and Onewhero and all branches were represented at the annual meeting of the Raglan electorate of the National Party in Hamilton. Mr Hallyburton Johnstone presided. In his report Mr Johnstone expressed the thankfulness of members at the news of the defeat of' Germany and urged members to do everything possible in continuing the war effort against the Japanese. He I referred to the various wartime controls and stressed the need for an energetic and strong party organisation to be in readiness for the next election. Mrs H. Ross, the National candidate in the Hamilton by-election, addressed the gathering and was received with great enthusiasm. She mentioned the part played by women in the war effort and in other walks of life. She was accorded a vote of thanks. A report on the work of the Dominion council was given by a member, Mr J. G. Reeves, who explained the various decisions arrived at by the body. The chairman referred to the fact that the annual meeting five years ago had been held under the shadow of bad news from Europe, France having been overrun. Mr Churchill had just madp his offer of common citizenship to the French people. Mr Johnstone pointed out the contrast of recent events and the great relief and feeling of thanksgiving evident. Election Of Officers The election of officers resulted:— Chairman, Mr Hallyburton Johnstone; vice-chairman, Mr A. W. Moore; secretary, Mr R. Braithwaite. A large executive was elected. The meeting passed a vote of thanks to the chairman and secretary in recognition of the work they had done in keeping alive the interest in the branch’s affairs.
