ROAD SAFETY WEEK Acting on the recommendation of the transport committee, the Hamilton Borough Council last night gave full approval to the proposals to organise a Road Safety Week from December 4 to 10. The council authorised the committee to spend up to £SO on publicising the scheme. Mr W. W. Dillicar expressed the hope that improved traffic conditions would be noticeable before the Christmas holiday season. The health and women’s interests committee recommended the council not to proceed at present with the provision of conveniences in the Victoria Street North area, and that the chairman (Mrs H. C. Ross) and Mr E. J. Watkins confer with the architects regarding an amended plan for the ferry, bank provision and plans for conveniences at Memorial Park. The council was also urged to negotiate for the purchase of two sections in Kent Street, Frankton, for a women’s rest-room. The committee recommended that a new pathway be formed to the river path on the northern side, of the Plunket rooms. Sympathy With R.S.A. Objective A lengthy circular from the New Zealand Returned Services Association concerning rehabilitation was received. It asked all local and public bodies to give preference of employment, when filling vacancies, to ex-servicemen and women, of whom 66,000 were members of the R.S.A. The council expressed sympathy with the objectives. The occupant of one of the municipal houses in Massey Street asked the council for co-operation in his plan to effect improvements to the house and section. His suggestion that the council agree to his utilising part of the deposit he had paid was approved on specified conditions to be determined by the Mayor. Loan of E.P.S. Huts The Under-secretary, Internal Affairs Department, Mr J. W. Heenan, wrote agreeing to the permanent loan of the E.P.S. huts, on the condition that the Borough Council and the E.P.S. committee agreed, and that the possibility of the huts being required for E.P.S. purposes at some future time was safeguarded. The letter was referred to the cultural committee. The Second N.Z.E.F. Association .was refused permission to hold “ Kiwi Day ” in the streets on December 22, the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, stating that the patriotic appeal closed on December 20. The association will be offered a day in the coming year. The Hamilton Technical High Schol was granted the use of the municipal baths on the same conditions as last year. The South Auckland Swimming I Centre’s application for the use of the municipal baths for its annual carnival on December 9 was refused, but the choice of two other Saturdays in December was given. The Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, presided, and also present were Mrs H. C. Ross, Messrs. E. J. Watkins, R. Braithwaite, E. G. Scrimshaw, H. M. Hammond, Arthur Fow, W. W. Dillicar, T. Parker, W. R. Shattock and A. J. Denz. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs. J. Treloar and D. C. Street.
