MUSICAL EVENING

WORKS OF MENDELSSOHN St. Paul’s Methodist Church, London Street, was well filled on Saturday night for a Mendelssohn % evening. Proceeds were in aid of the Methodist Maori Girls’ Hostel. Several attractive vocal and choral works were presented. Mr H. G. Cook gave a short talk on Mendelssohn and explained the works that were to be presented. He then played the Organ Sonata No. 1. The finale from Cappricio Brilliant was played by Mr J. Murphy, ,with Mr Cook accompanying him. Miss C. lVcLachlan played the Violin Concerto in E Minor and the Pianoforte Concerto in G Minor was played by Miss Diana Wall, an 18-years-old pianist of Te Awamutu. Soloists ducking the evening included Mrs Mona Poultney, Miss Freda Murphy, Misses C. Treloar, F. Olds, M. Arthur and H. Fear, and Mr W. B. L. Williams. The choir sang several items in pleasing fashion.
