Every now and again we read in the papers that “one more unfortunate” has paid the penalty for smoking in bed. How many have lost tneir lives in that way, who can say? Smokers are often stupidly careless. Smoking in bed is certainly a dangerous habit, but because some smokers persist in running foolish risks, is that any reason why all smoking should be taboo? As reasonable would it be to prohibit all sport because some sportsmen are foolhardy. But smoking in bed is not the only dangerous habit practised by smokers. What about the habitual use of tobacco well known to be full of nicotine? And there are lots of brands like that, which may affect heart, throat or nerves. Happily for New Zealanders, our own famous toasted brands, Cut Plug No. 10 (BuUshead), Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Pocket Edition, Riverhead Gold, Desert Gold and Cavendish, are as free from nicotine as they can possibly be. And while toasting purifies thus effectually, it helps at the same time to give these blends their renowned flavour and matchless bouquet.
