FURIOUS TANK BATTLES
PRESSURE BY AMERICANS STRONG ENEMY COUNTER-BLOW (Received Sept. 23, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 22 . The furious tank battles raging in the Alsace-Lorraine entered their fourth day with the Germans throwing in fresh forces, says the American Press correspondent with the Third American Army. The new German column apparently moved into position under cover of a fog, which reduced visibility to 50 feet. Several giant German tanks were knocked out in the first hour’s fighting.
The Germans drove through light tank outposts, which were badly mauled, but then confronted American heavy guns and tanks, which threw them back. Reuter’s correspondent with the Third Army says that about 69 German tanks were knocked out in the last 48 hours and more than 100 enemy tanks were destroyed in the last five days. The Germans still had more than 100 tanks, many of which were reported to have dug in /when their petrol ran out. The Americans north-east of Nancy crossed the Sille river but were thrown back by a counter-attack.
