GERMAN DEFENCES BREACHED ADVANCE ON LONG FRONT (Received Sept. 21, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 20 Marshal Stalin, in an Order of the Day addressed to Marshal Govorov, said: Troops on the Leningrad front, having passed over to the offensive north of Tartu, broke through the powerful German defences and in four days’ offensive operations advanced 42 miles on a 75-miles front, liberating more than 1500 inhabited localities.

Troops of the Leningrad front simultaneously went over to the offensive west of Narva and in three days’ fighting advanced to a depth of 38 miles, occupying more than 300 inhabited localities.
