LANDINGS IN PACIFIC

AMERICAN MARINES ADVANCE WASHINGTON, Sept. 18 United States marines continued to encounter heavy opposition on Peleliu Island, Pelew Group, on Saturday, but extended the area under their control on the south-western peninsula. Army forces have captured one-third of Angaur Island. This is reported in a Pacific Fleet communique. The American invaders of Morotai Island, in the Halmahera group, have achieved their immediate objectives. They have advanced well inland and hold a strong perimeter forward of the proposed aerodrome and naval base sites.
