CAPTURE OF ISLANDS

OFF THE DALMATIAN COAST YUGOSLAV PARTISANS’ MOVE LONDON, Sept. 18 Partisans have landed from Yugoslav ships on islands off the Dalmatian coast, in the Adriatic, and after four days of stubborn fighting freed the islands of Korcula, Hvar and Brae, reports a communique from Marshal Tito’s headquarters. The last remnants of the enemy garrisons on two more islands are being annihilated. The enemy suffered heavy losses. The capture of these islands has cut the Germans’ sea route by which they have been withdrawing their forces from the Southern Balkans.

Street fighting is reported in Valjevo, the main centre in Western Serbia, which the Partisans by-passed on their way to Lajkovac, 30 miles from Belgrade. It was reported earlier that the Partisans had captured Valievo.
