“THE FLYING DUSTBIN”

ALLIES’ NEW SECRET WEAPONS (Received Sept. 19, 2 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 18 Many devices, some of which are still secret, have been, developed to assist in breaching the German defences in western Europe. By no means all of them have yet been employed against the enemy. The initial breach effected in the coastal defences at the outset of the invasion was largely due to a special Armoured Vehicle .Royal Engineers (A.V.R.E.) vehicle, generally similar to the Churchill tank, but the interior is specially designed to accommodate the crew with the engineers, together with specially safeguarded explosive charges for use in demolitions.

The A.V.R.E. is able to hurl a charge containing many times the weight of the explosive of any other known projectile of similar dimensions against concrete or masonry obstacles. This bomb has been nicknamed “The Flying Dustbin.”
