SURRENDER OF FORTRESS

ADVANCE BEYOND NANCY NEW FAST GERMAN PLANE (Received Sept. 19, 2 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 18 The fortress of Mount Lambert, just east of Boulogne, has surrendered and the main section of the town is being mopped up, says the Supreme Command. The chief strongpoint still holding out is a gun position west of the river. General Patton’s armour is 18 miles east of Nancy, says Reuter’s correspondent. The British United Press’ correspondent says that a new German rocket-propelled fighter with an amazing speed has appeared over the Moselle sector.

Crack German troops, said to be from the Russian front, counterattacked on September 18 at the point of our deepest penetration into Germany, but were repulsed by small arms, says the British United Press’ correspondent with the United States First Army. The Americans fought from foxholes and trenches on top of a ridge overlooking St. Olbert, using grenades, Tommy-guns and automatic rifles.

There is only 50 yards between the German and American lines at this point and the German defenders are the finest infantry that the First Army has yet encountered.

The Germans in the Luxembourg area on September 17 pushed back the Americans two miles, but the ground was retaken during the night. Although the German counter-at-tacks were repulsed our advance in the region of the deepest penetration is virtually at a standstill.
