Mr C. H. Cato, Gisborne, is visiting Hamilton. Mr E. G. Appleton, Dargaville, is in Hamilton.
Mr R. F. Smith, Christchurch, is a visitor to Hamilton. Mr Anthony Eden, British Foreign Secretary, has returned to Britain from the Quebec Conference. Mr H. R. Chalmers, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, is in Suva on an inspection visit. Mr Chalmers was formerly accountant in the Suva branch. Mr H. H. McDougall, sub-editor of the Napier Daily Telegraph, retired on Saturday after 38 years’ service with the firm. Mr T. M. Geddis, manager, on behalf of the members of the staff, presented Mr McDougall with a hall barometer. Captain G. B. Morgan, of Christchurch, who was master of the Awatea when she was attacked and sunk after landing troops in North Africa in November, 1942, has been awarded Lloyd’s War Medal for bravery at sea, for his courageous handling of the ship during the attack.
