COAL STRIKE OVER
! MEN TO RESUME WORK
(Received April 11, 11 a.m.) LONDON, April 10
The Yorkshire coal strike will end on Wednesday. The great majority of the strikers will resume today or tomorrow, including 30,000 men in the Doncaster area. Newcastle police today arrested Lambert Heaton Lee, aged 28, a civil engineer from South Africa, and Angle Rosalie Keen, aged 29, both of whom were subsequently charged in camera with conspiring to further an illegal strike. They were remanded in custody, the police refusing bail. The resolution of the National Council of the Independent Labour expressing sympathy with the strikers was carried by the party conference. The conference also carried a resolution condemning the arrest of Lee and Keen and the in camera proceedings. The resolution added: “The purpose and policy of the arrest and prosecution are to turn the eyes of the public and workers from the failure of the Government to cope in any competent way with the evils of capitalist conditions. The conference warns the Government that the policy on which it appears to have embarked will only strengthen the unrest.” Mr McGovern, a member of the House of Commons, speaking on the resolution, declared that it was no accident that the arrests were carried out. They were the thin end of a wedge to drive out ot Britain small groups that would become powerful organis.dions of the future.
