HAURAKI DETAILS

Mr SUTHERLAND RETURNED

By an overwhelming majority, Mr A. S. Sutherland, National candidate, retained his seat for Hauraki, in a contest in which the issue was clearly between National and Labour interests, Mr Sutherland’s majority over the Labour candidate, Mr E. C. M. Robinson, being 3032, in a total of 8408 votes east. Only at three booths did Mr Sutherland fail to obtain a decisive maiority over his ooponents. Mr R. G. Young, Real Democracy; Mr D. C. Beloe, Democratic Labour, and Mr H. T. Head, Independent People’s Movement, polled insignificantly, the total votes cast in their favour being but eight per cent of the poll. The heaviest polling was at Mornnsville, where Mr Sullivan’s majority was just as pronounced as at nearly all the other centres. The only booths with a Labour majority were Kimihia, Mercer and Starrtown.

The first return came to hand about 7.15 p.m. from Mangatarata and from then on returns came steadily to hand from the remainder of the 58 booths. Morrinsville was one of the last to come in but, even though it was the largest in the electorate, the issue was beyond doubt fully an hour before.

Mr Sutherland won the seat in the National interests at the by-election on February 2, 1942, following the death, on active service, of the National member, Lieutenant-Colonel J. M. Allen, Mr Sutherland’s majority over his opponent, Mr H. T. Head, Independent, was 2596, Messrs Robinson and Head also spoke briefly and thanked that section of electors who had expressed through the ballot box their confidence in them.
