WAIKATO SEAT

COMFORTABLE WIN

MR GOOSMAN’S BIG VOTE

The contest for the Waikato seat soon resolved itself, for the early returns gave Mr Goosman such a commanding majority that it was quickly realised he would win by a handsome majority. This proved to be the case, and his eventual victory by over 4000 votes robbed the contest of special interest. Every return coming in increased the lead. At a late hour the four candidates addressed the electors in front of the Town Hall (the principal polling booth), and Mr Goosman thanked the electors for the continued confidence reposed in him and for the help accorded the National Party. He especially thanked the Returning Officer and his staff for the efficient and courteous manner in which the results had been made available to the public. The first result, from Taotaoroa, reached the returning officer at 7.7 p.m., but it was not until after 9 o’clock that any results came from the larger booths. However, more interest was shewn by the public in the result of contests other than in Waikato.

A total of just over 10,000 votes was cast for tjie four candidates, and Goosman recorded approximately 67 per cent., with Croall 24 per cent., Penniket 4 per cent., and Burke 3 per cent., the two last named forfeiting their deposits. Soldiers’ votes totalled 874.
