RACING
DEATH OF PAGANELLI Paganelli, one or the finest sprinters produced in New Zealand, has died on the property or his owner, M. J. Carroll, Te Rapa. In conjunction with Machine Gun and Amigo, Paganelli was credited with an Australasian record for five furlongs, 58 secs, established at Trentham in March, 19*27, but all track records at Trentham were wiped out in September, 193 9, when some discrepancies were discovered on the course being resurveyed. In his prime Paganelli was an outstanding sprinter and won up to a mile and a-quarter. His successes included the Fellding Stakes, Taranaki Stakes twice, Wanganui Jackson Stakes and Welington Stakes, and Thompson Handicap. Paganelli was taken to Australia in 1929 being runner-up to Kilarney In the Campbeltown Handicap and at his next start, with 9.6 in the saddle, was beaten hair a head by Amounls, a decision which met with a hostile reception from the crowd. Paganelli was by Lord Quex, out of the Imported mare Ringdove, by Collar, from Miss Chaffinch, by Goldfinch.
