NATIONAL PARTY YEW ZEALAND NATIONAL PARTY (South Auckland Division) Whatever the Labour Party may isay to the contrary the cost of living 'is unreasonably high and essential goods are in unnecessarily short supply. Government interference has hindered. For instance, has any 'commodity handled by the Internal Marketing Division become cheaper, more plentiful, or of better quality? 'ASK ANY HOUSEWIFE.

The National Party advocates Freedom for the small trader. The suppression of monopolies. Competition, which means lower prices and better quality. DEMOCRATIC LABOUR PfIRTV \TEW ZEALAND DEMOCRATIC LABOUR PARTY RAGLAN ELECTORATE Aircraftman A. Dillon will address public meetings as under:— Huntly Lyceum HaII—TONIGHT, FRIDAY, September 24, 8 p.m. “WE FIGHT FOR NEW ZEALAND” HIGHER COST OF LIVING INDICATED BY NATIONALISTS’ POLICY It is the intention of the National Party if returned to power to remove the barriers that prevent food costs rising. Further evidence of this is given by Mr A. S. Sutherland, M.P., Nationalist Candidate for Hauraki. Mr Sutherland stated that it was the intention of his party if returned to power to see that there was an in--1 crease in the price paid for farm produce. He also thought that the retail price of butter in New Zealand 1 should be raised. Mr F. W. Doidge, M.P., Nationalist Candidate for Tauranga, criticised the fixing of a ceiling price for vegetables. “I have been informed,” said [ Mr Doidge, ‘‘that the ceiling price | will be 6s a dozen for spring cab- | bages at this time of the year, a sum that quite definitely does not pay the grower.” The ceiling price indicated, he believed, would rule for the months of August, September and October, and it would mean that the growers were producing cabbages i “at a sacrifice to so-called stabilisation.” The Labour Government’s vegetable scheme will ensure that vege- , tables are available to the people at reasonable prices. Housewives need not be reminded of the ridiculous prices to which cabbages rose in the early years of the war, yet it is these j'very conditions to which Mr Doidge ; would have them return. Under Labour staple foods such as ; bread, flour, meat, sugar, etc., are E still at pre-war prices. Labour is de- ■ termined to keep living costs down. Housewives who want to keep the lid , on prices will vote Labour again. Mail for Italy In view of the existing situation in Italy, recent postings of parcels and letters for New Zealand prisoners in that country have been for- : warded to London so that correslj pondence could, if necessary, be reii directed and sent on from there, said ,! the Postmaster-General, the Hon. : P. C. Webb, today. He added that j this course would be continued until ! the position was clarified. ; An excellent quality in English [ Tapestry is now showing at Hooker and Kingston. It has a bold design 'similar to a paisley pattern in shades of either rust or green and is popular 'for Heavy Curtains, Cushions, Bedspreads, and, is strong enough for [upholstering "Suites of Furniture. It jis 48in. wide and marked at only 16s |6d a yard. The wise buyer will make an early call and secure their needs ias the quantity is limited.*
