THE OLD MAN

1 A dear little birdie had built her nest, And had laid her little clutch, A nest that she never dreamt, of course, That mortal man would touch, On a tree in the garden or a touchy old inan. who valued his bed of peas. 1 He couldn’t be blamed, knowing birds as he did, ! If their presence failed to please. 1 But what did he do? the cunning old fox. i He boiled them as hard as a stone, : And returned them again to the dear little } nest, 1 And quietly left them alone, j So dally she sits on her hard-boiled eggs, With her husband beside on his perch, j Watching for the day when the birdies i come out — 1 I’m afraid they’ll be left In the lurch.
