UNION FEES
POSITION OF GATE-KEEPERS SHOW SOCIETY’S COMPLAINT A complaint that the gate-keepers employed at the annual Morrinsville Show had been compelled to pay union fees although they were already members of other unions, was made by Mr R. T. Scott, secretary of the Morrinsville Agricultural and Pastoral Association, at the annual southern group conference of agricultural and pastoral show societies in Morrinsville yesterday. He had been informed on the morning cf the show by the secretary of the Gate-keepers’ Union, said Mr Scott, that the men on the gates would have to pay 5s to join the union and also 6d for each show day. “It seems unfair and unjust for men who already belong to other unions to have to belong the Gatekeepers’ Union,” commented Mr Scott. All the gate-keepers in Hamilton, said Mr W. L. Ranstead, belonged to the Gate-keepers’ Union. Apparently the idea of the union was to eliminate “one-day” gate-keepers. Strong criticism of the present position in regard to the Gate-keep-ers’ Union was expressed by other speakers, but it was decided that the matter was one for individual societies.
