Tuesday The Auckland Hospital Board decided last night to appeal for exemption from the five per cent general wages increase ordered by the Court of Arbitration. We consider at least 10 per cent is needed to meet the increase in the cost of living, and request that not only railwaymen, but all workers, be granted this increase, and also those in receipt of sustenance and pensions.” “This meeting strongly resents the continual demands of local bodies and chambers of commerce for the abolition of the 40-hour week and its substitution by a 48-hour week. We hereby reaffirm our adherence to the 40-hour week and shall strongly oppose its abolition or suspension in any degree.”
