DEFENCE PLANS

CANADA AND AMERICA APPOINTMENTS TO BOARD MEETING ON MONDAY (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) WASHINGTON, August 22 The six United States representatives on a joint United States-Can-adian Defence Board have been announced by Presiden + Roosevelt. They are: Mr Fiorello La Guardia, Mayor of New York; LieutenantGeneral Stanley S. Embrick, Commandant of the Fourth Corps Area, Atlanta, Georgia; Captain Harry W. Hill, of the Navy War Plans Division; Mr John D. Hickerson, assist-ant-chief of the State Department’s Division of European. Affairs; Captain Forrest P. Sherman, of the Navy War Plans Division; and LieutenantColonel Joseph McNarney, of the Army Air Corps. Captain Sherman and LieutenantColonel McNarney will together represent a single seat. They will also alternate in the absence of any other member.

President Roosevelt said the Canadian Prime Minister, Mr W. L. Mackenzie King, had designated Mr O. M. Biggar, K.C.; Brigadier K. Stuart, Deputy-Chief of the General Staff; Captain L. W. Murray, Deputy-Chief of the Naval Staff; Air Commander A. A. L. Cuffe, air member of the Air Staff of the Royal Canadian Air Force; and Mr Hugh L. Kennleyside, counsellor to the Department of External Affairs. The latter will be secretary of the Canadian section. Mr Hickerson will be secretary of the United States section. The Joint Board will hold its first meeting next Monday.
