CHILDREN KILLED
PARENTS BLOWN FROM ROOM CASUALTIES IN BRITAIN RAIDERS BROUGHT DOWN (Official Wireless) (Received August 24, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, August 23 A bomber, hotly pursued by a British fighter, jettisoned six bombs over a north-east coast town this morning. Two children, aged three and seven years respectively, were killed. Their father and mother were asleep and were blown into the roadway from an upstairs bedroom. Considerable damage was done to houses and hotels.
Another raider dropped bombs on south-east England. One man was killed and two injured. A raider on a north-west Scotland town dropped four bombs, one of which fell on a bungalow and killed a man and his grandson. The mother of the latter was critically injured. An air raid warden was also killed. The Air Ministry states that Lewis gunfire shot down an enemy bomber this morning from the ground. Nine enemy planes were destroyed on August 22, seven by fighters and two by anti-aircraft fire. Four of our fighters were lost, but two pilots are safe. Machine-gun Attacks An Air Ministry and Ministry of Home Security communique states: Indiscriminate machine-gun attacks were made at various places in the Midlands and one of the eastern districts. A small number of casualties was caused, but none was fatal. Bombs were dropped in three localities but there was only small damage. It is learned that our fighters shot down another enemy plane during yesterday’s battles, bringing yesterday’s total to ten. of 1100 miles.
