BIG INCREASE IN EXPORTS BRITISH EMPIRE PURCHASES LOSS *OF EUROPEAN MARKETS (United Pre-ss Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) WASHINGTON. August 22 British Empire purchases and the expanding South American trade increased United States exports in the first ten months of the war, 35 percent. above the same period last year, despite the loss of important European markets. The foreign sales totalled 3,273,000,000 dollars from September to June, of which the Empire countries bought 1,235.000.000 dollars worth, compared with 905,000,000 dollars previously. Latin America bought 661,000.000 dollars worth, compared with 461,000.000 dollars worth previously. The British orders for arms and munitions in July totalled 131.819.000 dollars, and Canadian 4.465,000 dollars, each being over half the value of similar shipments in the previous six months.
