HAMILTON BRANCH

CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE FIRST BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION A very happy finale to their first year’s activities was the first birthday celebration of the Hamilton branch of the Catholic Women’s League held in the Marist Hall on Thursday evening. Not only were members present in large numbers, but many visitors from neighbouring branches attended to take part in the celebration. The hall was gay with artistic decorations in colourings of orange, gold and yellow, the stage setting being particularly effective with its deep gold background relieved with large bronze bowls of pussy willow and spring flowers. During the evening, to mark the happy occasion, floral tokens were presented to the president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer. A varied and entertaining programme was presented, commencing with a most enjoyable item by the newly-formed League Choir, who presented a bracket of numbers, followed by instrumental numbers by Misses Imelda and Zita Austin (piano and violin), vocal solos by Miss Dorothy Salter and Mrs E. K. Murphy, elocution items by Miss Phyllis White and two readings which the audience appeared to appreciate to the fullest. In a sketch “Noblesse Oblige” the trials and troubles attending the entrance into society of two nouveau riche ladies were presented by Miss Mary MoMullin and Mrs E. P. Kelleher and in a one-act play entitled “Bunkered” the efforts of a would-be sporting mother-in-law caused endless amusement, the parts being taken by Mrs J. Holden and Mrs W. Smith. Misses M. McMullin and M. Salter were the accompanists for the evening. A delicious supper was served and the ceremony of cutting the birthday cake, donated by Mrs Dillon, was performed by the visiting presidents. Congratulations and best wishes for the coming year were extended to the branch by the Rev. Father Bleakley and the Rev. Father Ryan, who also rerharked on the generous enthusiasm of the visitors in making the trip to Hamilton. Community singing and finally “Auld Lang Syne” brought to a close a very happy evening.
